Name that Critter! *Win a Prize*

Just for fun, I've decided to give the first three people who can correctly identify the species pictured above a free digital download of any one of my photographs. Just submit your answer as a comment and I'll contact you via email or by commenting on your blog if you're a winner (make sure your email is displayed on your profile if you don't have a blog)! And to make things a bit harder for those who know their zoology, if you're able to correctly identify what the animal is resting on I'll throw in a 2nd photo as well. Go!

Wow, I wish I knew my zoology... never was very good at that though. I have no idea what species this is!! Looking forward to finding out! :)

Is it Ceratomia undulosa? It would have been easier to guess, if you had included a whole-body-shot! ;)

As far as what it's resting on... An even wilder guess. It looks like oak bark with lichen growing on it, but that's a long-shot! :)

This was fun! I love a good challenge!

Just a guess here based on the color and pattern, but I am not much of a caterpillar person LOL

Antheraea polyphemus

Sorry, Illusive Dreamer! That's incorrect. So far only two people have guessed correctly, though I'm choosing not to publish their comments until the game is over to avoid giving anything away.

Haha :-) I kind of figured it was wrong, but that was the closest thing I could find that looked like it. I will just say it is a big fat green caterpillar!!! Can't wait to find out what it is.

Does it matter if you look it up on google? Because I looked it up and figured out it was a sphinx moth caterpillar. I did not find out the scientific name though.

Hi Grant,

Yes, you are right: the picture on my photography blog is of a tobacco hornworm, also called a Carolina Sphinx Moth in its adult stage. Please fill out the contact form on on Dakota's Nature Photos and let me know which photo you have chosen as your prize.
